Seven d’ Six recently performed at Snapper’s in Waikiki. But who is Seven d’ Six, what does he use, and why the name??

Well, I will start with the name. It started when I initialed artwork I created in high school. The “TG” ended up looking like “76″. It stuck years after, and at work they would sometimes refer to me as Seventy-Six. I lived in Coeur d’ Alene, so I took the – d’ – and added it. My symbol consists of 7-D’-6 all intertwined with each other. There you have it. Mystery solved. Let’s move on.

Seven d’ Six is Tavis Glover, me. I love to create music! It’s a great way to portray emotion. Lately I have been making upbeat tracks at 120 bpm for my LIVE sets. Aside from the “bangers”, I like to make slow ambient music that has a deeper feel. In each track I like to combine a balance of rough beats, fatty bass, and pleasing melodies, which build up to a climax. I am learning with each track, wether it’s beats, effects, or mastering.

Currently I am working with Logic Studio 9. The program is amazing, and much more advanced than my previous software Fruity Loops. I’m not knocking Fruity Loops though, because it is capable of great things as well. Other equipment includes the Yamaha CS-15 which is an old vintage analog synthesizer which sounds unreal. The Korg MicroKorg (small and powerful), Korg Kaoss Pad 3 (effects), Korg mini-kp (effects), Korg Kaossilator (phrase synthesizer), Yamaha KX-25 (midi controller with awesome arpeggiator). All the equipment I use is great and I highly recommend each piece.

Recently Tavis Glover of IPOX studios was interviewed by Justina Glover of Web Dezizle. An aspiring design student, and a great sister as well! She asked a series of questions that I thought would be useful to folks that are new to graphic design.

Questions:

1. What is the most valuable lesson you took away from design school?

That they can only teach me so much, and it’s up to me to continue to study and learn on my own if I want to truly excel. I would always watch tutorials, podcasts, surf design sites, read books, anything that would help me learn design and give me inspiration. Be passionate about design!

2. What is your favorite part of the design process and why?

The creativity of it all. It provides an outlet for me to express myself and maybe provoke emotion in others. I also enjoy the technical side of things. Watching all of the research and thumbnails finally come to life on the computer screen is the best.

3. What design are you most proud of and why?

My most recent design which is a mock poster I did for the UFC. It encompasses a lot of techniques I have learned along the way. I’m also including a set of three related logos that I designed for a business in Las Vegas. They were a blast to design and the end result was satisfying to me, and the client as well.

4. What do you think is one of the biggest mistakes new designers make?

Not keeping things simple. It’s good to find a balance of simple, yet still creative. A bad example of simple is a word that is bold and italicized, with drop shadow and outer glow. Something I try to remember is to ALWAYS change the default settings. For example, your blending options inside of photoshop. If you keep your drop shadow or outer glow at the default settings it’s going to look generic and like everyone else’s. Increase the distance, lower the opacity, do what you like, but keep it subtle (simple). Here’s a helpful acronym to remember – K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Silly)

5. Who are a couple of your design heroes?

It would have to be Bert Monroy and Russell Brown. They were great at building a foundation for me to learn and have fun doing it. They are excellent for beginner and intermediate levels. I found myself addicted to their podcasts (Bert and Russell)…which are FREE on iTunes. Others that helped me are Rafael Concepcion and Corey Barker from Layers TV podcast, and Chad Perkins from Lynda.com.

A new piece of machinery was added to the arsenal. The new Canon EOS 7D. This Camera is amazing and packs quite a punch.  Watch the test video and listen to a new track…what are you waiting for?

This is a collection of videos using the Canon EOS 7D. This machine is completely awesome! Not only does it take great pictures and HD video, but you can also film in 720p at 60fps. This means you can get great looking slow motion video too!

I used a Canon 50mm, and 28-135mm lens. Everything was handheld. It’s video settings are 1080 @ 24fps. All of it was shot in Texas.

If you read my bio, then you know this whole design obsession of mine was spawned by music. When I first started making music (later becoming a graphic designer), I wanted to come up with a name for a company that would be ahead of its time, original, and a cutting edge. As I brainstormed, I shuffled through old sketches of mine for inspiration, and came across a unique alien named IPOX, that I had drawn in 10th grade art class. Once I saw IPOX and knowing what most aliens were perceived as (ahead of our time, unique, advanced), I knew it would have to be the center of my company’s ideal. I named my company IPOX studios.

At first, the actual alien was incorporated into the logo and supposed to be the identity of a record label I had in mind. Later, after becoming more involved with design, and a carefully thought out redesign, my alien was dismissed, but the name and ideal remain. I would like to introduce to you IPOX – a symbol for new beginnings, advanced ideas, and unique style!

Learn some essential Photo Retouching skills using Adobe Photoshop. Crop a good image and make it great! Add Gaussian blur, then add a layer mask to create a focal point. A simple, quick tutorial that adds a lot to any photo!
