Using Phi calipers is a great way to help create harmonic proportions throughout your painting. It’s an old technique that was used by master painters, but if you look for proper use today, you rarely find any direction. This is what I intend to cover today by showing how George-Pierre Seurat uses his calipers to place his objects throughout his painting. He not only uses this method of harmonic proportions, but he also designs his painting as any master should (see Day 23).
